Dublin Taxi Driver Faces €2,000 Loss After Sexual Assault on Female Passenger

Dublin: A Dublin taxi driver incurred a €2,000 loss after being convicted of sexually assaulting a female passenger. Lucas Bittencourt (39), residing on Upper Dominic Street, Dublin, was prosecuted by the National Transport Authority (NTA) following an incident that occurred on May 14 in Dublin.

In Dublin District Court, Judge Anthony Halpin imposed a fine on Lucas for his misconduct towards the female passenger, who was awarded €1,600 while the NTA received €400 towards costs. The incident unfolded as Lucas persistently harassed the passenger during the journey, inquiring about her relationship status and living arrangements. Upon the passenger’s complaint, the Garda escorted the driver, only to discover the missing sum of money. Lucas, expressing remorse for his actions, acknowledged his mistake when questioned by NTA officer Anthony Carey.

The passenger, who had hailed the taxi to Northwood, utilised the Revolt app for payment, which featured the driver’s image, facilitating his identification. Despite Lucas’s claim of being Brazilian, his true identity was revealed. Despite maintaining an unblemished record prior to this incident, Lucas’s legal counsel’s plea for leniency was not entertained by the court.

The court emphasised Lucas’s obligation to uphold the safety and comfort of customers, admonishing him for his behavior. Although no custodial sentence was imposed, Lucas was directed to issue an unconditional apology for his actions. The offense carries a potential fine of €2,500, underscoring the seriousness of the misconduct perpetrated by the driver.
