Eir launches 5G broadband nationwide; high speed in Irish villages too

DUBLIN: Ireland’s mobile and broadband telecommunications firm Eir has launched 5G broadband across the country. The service is being launched in some rural areas where fiber broadband or other high-speed options are not available. The service will use Eir’s latest 5G mobile network and will not require any aerial or external dish. The company claims that its 5G network covers 57% of the population.

The new service will support speeds of up to 500Mbs depending on distance from the tower, but it may also give speeds of less than 50Mbs, dropping to 4G in some areas. The company stated that there will be no monthly data cap, but customers who use the service excessively may have their speeds limited.

The 5G service can be used on up to 20 computers, phones, TVs and other devices at the same time. It can be brought on holidays and will connect to a 4G or 5G signal anywhere it detects one. The package is only available as a billpay service at €45 per month. The package is only offered as a billpay service at a monthly cost of €45. A subsidised 5G router will cost an extra €100.

“In areas where fibre broadband is not yet available, this product can provide a real alternative,” said Susan Brady, Eir’s managing director of consumer and small business. “It is a solution for homes and businesses that cannot yet access high speed wired broadband,” she added.

Eir’s latest move comes as the company continues to expand its fiber internet network in cities and large towns. It plans to switch all its major fixed line business to fiber within the next three years.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s National Broadband Plan is currently in progress in rural areas of Cavan, Cork, Limerick, Clare, Kerry and Monaghan counties. Consumers have to pay €45 per month for this government service that guarantees 500Mbs service.
