Elections in Ireland in November? Sinn Féin Unveils Ambitious Housing Overhaul with Promise to Deliver 300,000 Homes in Five Years

Dublin: Sinn Féin, Ireland’s main opposition party, has announced an ambitious and comprehensive plan to transform the housing sector, pledging to deliver 300,000 new homes over the next five years. Under the banner “A Home Of Your Own,” the party aims to address the country’s housing crisis by investing €39 billion into the sector, with a focus on increasing home ownership through more affordable housing.

As speculation grows about a potential general election in mid-November, Sinn Féin, widely seen as the likely leader of the next government, has presented these bold promises as part of their strategic vision for Ireland’s future.

Key elements of the proposed plan include collaboration with local councils to implement the extensive home-building program. Sinn Féin has also pledged to establish a state-owned construction company to oversee the development of these new homes. Additionally, the party proposes a three-year freeze on rent increases, along with reforms to the Tenant in Situ scheme, which would facilitate tenants’ ability to remain in or purchase their homes when landlords decide to sell.

Sinn Féin’s housing strategy also advocates for the phasing out of social housing on long-term leases in favour of direct investment in public housing. The party intends to streamline planning processes and promote innovative construction methods, including carbon-free technologies and off-site construction, to expedite building timelines and minimise environmental impact. Furthermore, Sinn Féin has criticised existing government schemes like “Help to Buy,” arguing that they contribute to inflated house prices.

However, the party’s proposals have faced criticism from ruling parties, including Fianna Fáil. Micheál Martin, leader of Fianna Fáil, dismissed Sinn Féin’s housing policy as lacking stability and asserted that his party would not consider forming a coalition government with Sinn Féin to gain power.

This announcement by Sinn Féin marks a significant escalation in the political debate surrounding Ireland’s housing crisis as the country edges closer to what could be a pivotal election.
