DUBLIN: Electric cars that can be charged in less than five minutes will hit Irish roads by 2025. The claim was made by StoreDot, an Israeli company that produces fast-charging battery outside of a laboratory.
The company claims that the battery, which claims to revolutionize the electric vehicle charging experience, will soon be mass-produced. The company says the discovery of batteries that can be charged in the same amount of time it takes to fill a tank of petrol will significantly increase the production of electric cars.
Charging is a major issue for electric cars. Long queues and the like can cause big problems, and the new battery is the solution to it all. Charging in five minutes is not a dream, it is a reality – says StoreDot CEO Dr. Doron Myersdorf.
New technology requires DC current. So fast charging is only possible at roadside charging stations. They will be repurposed petrol stations. Petrol stations will be set up for fast charging through forecourt charging. This facility can never be set up in homes.
“In these forecourts you will be able to get 350kw or even half a megawatt of a charging station that will enable extreme fast charging of your vehicle. Batteries will charge at home as well but to use the 5kw, 10kw or 15kw you have at home it will take overnight or at least five or six hours to get a full charge,” the company said.
