Washington: Elon Musk’s Grok AI chatbot is at the centre of growing international controversy after reports emerged that the system falsely tagged fully clothed women and children as nude or in bikinis, sparking serious safety concerns and regulatory action.
The AI tool — integrated with Musk’s social media platform X — has been blocked in several countries amid fears it could generate or misclassify inappropriate images. The UK government has confirmed it is examining whether to restrict or ban X over the issue, while Indonesia has formally banned Grok, citing the risk of fake pornographic imagery.
Musk rejected claims that Grok produces illicit content involving minors, saying there is “zero chance” such images are being generated. He stated that Grok only creates visuals when a user explicitly requests them and will not fulfil illegal prompts.
The billionaire added that the bot is designed to comply with the legal frameworks of every country where it operates.
The controversy has sparked heated debate across social media. Some users have defended Musk’s assurances, while others criticised the technology and demanded stronger safeguards.
