Dublin: An English tourist in his forties was seriously injured following an assault in Temple Bar Square in Dublin city centre in the early hours of Friday morning. He was taken to Beaumont Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
The incident has reignited concerns about public safety and anti-social behaviour in Dublin, with critics claiming it highlights the government’s inability to tackle ongoing problems in the city.
In recent months, Gardaí have increased patrols and strengthened public order policing in the city centre, which has led to a reduction in visible drug dealing and some anti-social activity. However, attacks on visitors remain a growing concern.
Local business and community representatives argue that the problem extends beyond policing. Stephen Kennedy, chairperson of the Aston Quay and Temple Bar Business and Residents Alliance, said that side lanes and back streets in Temple Bar have become hubs for drug dealing and disorderly behaviour. He called for a comprehensive regeneration of the area and for increased Garda foot patrols.
Kennedy also stressed that the issue is partly due to urban planning and design flaws, noting that he has contacted Dublin City Council to address these concerns.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan confirmed he had been briefed on the attack. Gardaí said their investigation is ongoing and appealed to the public for assistance.
