MILAN: The European Union (EU) has announced plans to build a railway line connecting European countries. The project is part of the EU’s goal of bringing the continent to carbon neutrality by 2050.
Carlo Borghini, head of Shift2Rail, said the increased use of rail transport, which emits only 0.5% carbon emissions, would help combat climate change. Shift2Rail is an EU organisation that conducts research in the field of rail transport.
Despite the fact that Europe’s rail networks are excellent, only 7 to 11% of people travel by rail. People are hesitant to travel by rail because of the high expense of cross-border train travel and the lack of a train system linking some major cities. There are currently no train services from Paris to Berlin and from Brussels to Copenhagen.
As a solution to this, Shift2Rail has now come up with the idea of a Single European Rail Area (SERA) connecting the whole of Europe. According to Borgani, the aim of Shift2Rail is to transport migrants and goods with low carbon emissions from one end of Europe to the other. He added that countries could be part of the SERA without changing existing systems such as locos, wagons, power and signaling.
Shift2Rail has been given 1 billion euros to conduct research on this. This amount is allocated for study into lowering railway expenses, increasing capacity, and improving punctuality.
Meanwhile, Juan Vicén Balaguer, CMO of Zeleros Hyperloop, has suggested that the EU’s goal can be achieved with the help of the Mag Rail and Hyperloop rail systems.
