The climate report for 2021 has been prepared by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service and the UN. According to the report, Alpine glaciers lost 30 metres (about 100 feet) between 1997 and 2021. The melting of Greenland’s ice sheet is raising sea levels. For the first time in history, this is taking place.
In Turkey, Italy, and Greece, it has caused severe droughts, high temperatures, and massive wildfires. Following the heatwave, the temperature in Syracuse, Sicily, reached a record 48.8 degrees Celsius in the summer (August).
Climate pollution is decreasing.
At the same time, some EU countries have succeeded in reducing climate pollution, according to the report. Based on the report, the EU aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, but between 1990 and 2020, emissions were reduced by 31%.
Countries agreed to reduce global temperatures by 2/1.5 degrees Celsius in the 2015 Paris Agreement. Some other UN reports stated that the countries of the world still have a long way to go in achieving this goal.
