European Commission sets deadline for ending sales of diesel and petrol vehicles

BRUSSELS: The European Commission may propose 2035 as the final year in which petrol and diesel cars can be sold in Europe in the climate package of 14 July.

The Commission’s general director for climate, Mauro Petriccione, mentioned the possibility of a 2030 target of 40 grams of CO2 per kilometer. This would mean a 60% reduction in emissions for new cars when compared to today. Mr. Petriccione said the commission plans to end sales of diesel and gasoline engines in the hopes of achieving 100% of the target by 2035.

Pascal Canfin, President of the European Parliament’s Environment Commission, explains that in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, all new cars launched on the global market must aim for zero emissions by 2035. He said European manufacturing firms are awaiting a political decision in this matter.
