Cyprus: Several European countries have begun deploying naval forces to the eastern Mediterranean following a drone attack on the British RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus earlier this week. The move aims to strengthen security in the region amid rising tensions linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Spain, Italy and the Netherlands are joining Greece and France, which had already stationed military assets in the area. Greece has dispatched two frigates—Kimon and Psara—along with four F-16 fighter jets to Cyprus. France has deployed its advanced anti-missile and anti-drone frigate Languedoc. Spain has also sent its modern Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate Cristóbal Colón, which is expected to reach waters near Crete next week after completing exercises in the Baltic Sea.
Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto confirmed that Italy would join France, Spain and the Netherlands in strengthening the naval presence. Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides thanked Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for the support and confirmed Italy’s participation. The Netherlands is also preparing to deploy the frigate HNLMS Evertsen to operate alongside a French carrier strike group.
The United Kingdom had earlier announced additional defensive measures, including the deployment of the Type-45 destroyer HMS Dragon and two Wildcat helicopters equipped with Martlet missiles to strengthen drone defence. UK Defence Secretary John Healey, who visited Cyprus on Thursday, held talks with Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas following the incident.
Investigation into Drone Attack Ongoing
British authorities have said that the exact source of the drone attack on the Akrotiri base remains unclear. Initial investigations by UK defence officials have found no conclusive evidence linking the drones directly to Iran, and Britain has not yet assigned responsibility for the strike.
Security analysts believe the base may have been targeted in the context of the wider Middle East conflict. European nations are therefore increasing their military presence in the eastern Mediterranean to safeguard strategic bases and key maritime routes.
However, international observers warn that the growing military buildup in the region could raise the risk of further tensions. European leaders, meanwhile, say diplomatic efforts are continuing to prevent the conflict from escalating into a broader regional crisis.
