Doha: European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has openly acknowledged her strong alignment with the United States, even amid public criticism directed at her. Speaking at the Doha Forum—an annual diplomatic gathering in the Qatari capital—Kallas was responding to a question regarding the recently released US national security strategy, which includes pointed critiques of European institutions.
“The US certainly delivers a lot of criticism, and some of it is justified,” Kallas said. “But the United States remains Europe’s most important ally. While we may differ on individual issues, the broader principle stands—we are close partners, and we must stand together.”
The new US national security strategy, published Friday, contains several remarks aimed at Europe, accusing it of being overly restrictive, insufficiently assertive, and weakened by cultural pressures linked to immigration.
Kallas conceded that Europe often underestimates its own influence, citing its handling of relations with Russia as an example. “We need to be more confident,” she said.
At the same time, Kallas voiced firm opposition to Washington’s reported proposal for Ukraine to surrender territory that Russia has failed to capture militarily, in exchange for advancing Kyiv’s path toward NATO membership. Addressing the forum, she warned that pressuring Ukraine into concessions would not deliver lasting stability.
“If aggression is rewarded, it will be repeated,” Kallas stated. “We see this not only in Ukraine and Gaza, but across the world.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian and US officials are holding a third consecutive day of discussions in Miami as they seek a pathway to ending the war with Russia.
