Extreme cold and snowfall: Met Eireann issues Yellow snow and ice warning across Ireland

DUBLIN: Met Eireann warns that Ireland is heading for extreme cold. Met Eireann has issued an 18-hour emergency snow and ice warning in Ireland, with the country expected to drop to minus 4C this evening.

The warning applies to all 26 counties in Ireland from 6pm today (Saturday) until midnight on Sunday. The meteorologist also said that there was a possibility of hazardous conditions due to hail, sleet and fog.

A number of agencies have warned of heavy snowfall in Dublin tomorrow morning. Volunteers have stepped up care for the homeless in the city. The city council also issued a warning to prevent homeless people from getting involved in heavy snowfall.

Special warnings were issued for Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo from Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon.

Temperatures will reach -4C. Snow and sleet are expected on Saturday night. Rain is also expected in Munster and south Leinster on Sunday morning, the meteorologist said. There will be showers and snowfall in the north and west. The maximum temperature is 3 to 5 degrees.

It will be nice and cold from this morning Most of the country will have dry weather. However, fog and snow will continue in most parts of the country. The maximum temperature in the afternoon is 2 to 5 degrees.

“Cold for the remainder of this weekend and to start next week. Sleet and snow on Saturday night will clear eastwards, with a mix of showers and clear spells following for Sunday and Monday. Turning unsettled but milder for the rest of next week,” Met Eireann said.

“Turning unsettled on Tuesday with widespread rain, turning to sleet or snow for a time as it meets the colder air. A milder day over the southern half of the country with highest afternoon temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees, but remaining cold over the northern half of the country with highest afternoon temperatures of just 2 to 5 degrees,” a forecaster said.

“Outbreaks of rain will continue on Tuesday night. However, it will be a milder night with lowest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees,” he added.
