Dublin: Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has confirmed that former Dublin GAA football manager Jim Gavin has been selected as the party’s candidate for the upcoming presidential election. The final decision will rest with the party’s parliamentary committee, which is made up of 71 TDs, senators, and MEPs.
Martin described Gavin as the ideal person to represent the Irish people as president. Party whip Paul McAuliffe and deputy leader Jack Chambers also publicly endorsed Gavin’s candidacy.
Fianna Fáil has a long history of nominating prominent figures for the presidency, including Mary McAleese, Douglas Hyde, and Seán T. O’Kelly. The election is scheduled to take place at the end of October. At present, Independent TD Catherine Connolly is the only other confirmed candidate.
Meanwhile, internal discussions continue within Fianna Fáil. MEP Billy Kelleher has expressed interest in running, despite Martin stating that Kelleher had not indicated such intentions in their last conversation two weeks ago. Kelleher later confirmed his decision to contest and has received the backing of fellow MEP Barry Andrews, who argued that Kelleher possesses all the qualities required to be the next president.
Elsewhere, political rivals are preparing their own nominations. There are strong indications that Fine Gael will put forward Heather Humphreys as its candidate, while Sinn Féin has yet to declare its position.
In addition, Maria Steen, a member of the Catholic advocacy group Iona Institute, has confirmed that she is seeking support to enter the race. Steen would require the backing of at least 20 TDs to secure a place on the ballot.
