Dublin: The newly elected 34th Dáil Éireann is set to convene for its first meeting today, with significant developments anticipated regarding the appointment of the Ceann Comhairle (Speaker). Reports suggest that an agreement has been reached between the Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael parties to nominate independent TD Verona Murphy for the position. Parliamentary committees from both parties are said to have finalised this decision, with party leaders Micheál Martin and Simon Harris presenting the proposal at their respective meetings.
While Murphy’s nomination appears to have broad support, it has sparked dissent among some Fianna Fáil members, who view the move unfavourably. Party leadership is reportedly working to address their concerns. Fianna Fáil TD Micheál Moynihan, once considered a potential contender for the role, has officially withdrawn his candidacy, stating he is not in the race. Outgoing Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl, also of Fianna Fáil, has announced his candidacy despite previously indicating he would not seek a third term.
Government Formation Discussions Progress
Discussions on forming a new government are also underway, with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael targeting a coalition agreement by January 22. Party sources suggest that negotiations on ministerial portfolios will commence by Friday, following the conclusion of other key discussions. The proposal to nominate Verona Murphy as Speaker is reportedly part of a broader strategy to secure support from the Regional Independent Group, enhancing the coalition’s majority.
Both Martin and Harris emphasised the strategic importance of Murphy’s appointment during their respective party meetings, with indications that there was little opposition to the proposal. It is expected that Fianna Fáil TDs will overwhelmingly support Murphy in the secret ballot.
Candidates for the Ceann Comhairle Role
In addition to Verona Murphy, three other candidates are vying for the position of Ceann Comhairle: outgoing Speaker Seán Ó Fearghaíl, Fianna Fáil TD John Guinness, and Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh. A secret ballot will determine the winner, with the successful candidate automatically securing re-election in the next general election.
Ó Fearghaíl, who was re-elected as a TD from Kildare South, has decided to contest despite earlier statements ruling out a third term as Ceann Comhairle. Murphy’s appointment, if successful, is expected to strengthen Fianna Fáil’s position within the coalition, as it may pave the way for the party to secure an additional ministerial post.
The Dáil proceedings today will set the tone for the formation of Ireland’s next government, with significant political manoeuvres taking shape in both chambers.
