DUBLIN: A total of 56 COVID-19 cases have been identified so far among people in mandatory hotel quarantine. The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has confirmed that five of these positive cases were variants of concern.
The chief medical officer, Dr. Tony Holohan, had earlier recommended the cabinet to add more European and EU countries to the Ireland’s mandatory hotel quarantine list. But the government rejected the advice.
The Minister for Health told Cabinet that the CMO suggested that a number of other European countries, including EU member states, be added to the list based on the virus’s incidence rate. According to the cabinet sources, Mozambique, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Mongolia, Iran and Costa Rica are among the countries that have been added to the hotel quarantine list based on the incidence rate.
Ten deaths and 426 new cases
The NPHET has confirmed 426 new COVID-19 cases in Ireland yesterday. The total number of confirmed cases now stands at 247,489.
The NPHET also confirmed that ten further deaths had been recorded in the country, bringing the death toll from COVID-19 to 4,884.
Of the cases confirmed yesterday, 203 were men and 221 were women. 74% are under 45 years of age and the median age is 29.
156 of the new cases are in Dublin, 39 in Donegal, 28 in Kildare, 28 in Meath, 25 in Limerick and the remaining 150 cases are spread across 18 other counties.
As of yesterday morning, 153 COVID-19 patients were hospitalised, with 47 in ICU.
