Dublin: Former Prime Minister of Ireland, John Bruton, aged 76, has passed away after a prolonged period of treatment, as confirmed by his family.
Mr. Bruton breathed his last yesterday morning at the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin. He began his political journey by being elected to represent Meath in the Dáil in 1969. Notably, from 1994 to 1997, he spearheaded the Rainbow Coalition government, comprised of Fine Gael, Labour, and the Democratic Left.
Born in Dublin on May 18, 1947, John Bruton served as the leader of Fine Gael from 1990 until January 31, 2001. Following his re-election to the Dáil in May 2002, he resigned from his post on October 31, 2004, subsequently assuming the role of EU Ambassador to the US the following month.
John Bruton’s legacy includes his pivotal role in the peace process of Northern Ireland, culminating in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which brought an end to decades of sectarian conflict. Additionally, he led the referendum that legalised divorce during his tenure.
In a heartfelt message, President Michael D. Higgins expressed condolences, acknowledging Bruton’s unwavering commitment to public service both in Ireland and on the international stage.
Former British Prime Minister John Major also mourned Bruton’s passing, expressing deep sadness at the news.
The demise of the former Prime Minister elicited grief from all corners of Ireland’s political landscape, with prominent leaders coming forward to express their condolences.
