Former Prime Minister Leo Varadkar to Exit Politics Following Fine Gael Leader Simon Coveney

Dublin: Former Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, 45, has announced his departure from politics, following the recent exit of Fine Gael leader Simon Coveney. Varadkar revealed that he will not be contesting the next general election.

Having previously stepped down from his roles as party president and prime minister, Varadkar had hinted at remaining active in politics. However, he announced his decision to leave at a Fine Gael party meeting in Dublin. Varadkar, a TD for over 20 years, was first elected from the Castleknock/Blanchardstown constituency on Fingal County Council. He subsequently represented Dublin West in four consecutive terms.

A Personal and Political Decision

Varadkar stated that his choice was both personal and political. He made the announcement at a meeting of the party’s Dublin West constituency organisation on Tuesday evening.

“It has been a great honour to serve the community and the country as a councillor and TD,” Varadkar said, expressing gratitude for the opportunity. He emphasised that it was now time to explore new options and opportunities.

“I have never seen myself solely as a political figure. I am now contemplating other ways to serve society. I will complete my term in the Dáil,” Varadkar added.

New Candidate for Dublin West to Be Decided in September

Varadkar confirmed that he would remain a TD until the Dáil is dissolved. He expressed contentment in making this decision while the party is in a strong position.

A convention to select a new party candidate for Dublin West will be held in mid-September. The next general election is scheduled for next year, provided the current government completes its term.

However, given the recent success of the ruling parties in local and EU elections, there is strong speculation that the election may be called earlier. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, the leading parties in the coalition government, performed well in the last election.
