France Bans Unauthorised Protests…

Paris: The French government has announced restrictions on unauthorised protests amid growing unrest over the rising cost of living, as President Emmanuel Macron seeks to prevent a repeat of the violence that erupted during demonstrations last weekend.

Macron announced the measures after meeting with intelligence officials and senior ministers. He said demonstrations organised by recognised organisations would be permitted, although protest routes could be changed.

The president stressed that restoring public order was a priority. He said a defence council involving senior government officials would meet on Friday to consider measures to address the nationwide protests expected on Saturday and in the days that follow.

Meanwhile, a court overturned a police ban on student demonstrations scheduled to take place in Paris on Thursday. However, protests planned for the same day in Grenoble, Rouen, Le Havre and Toulon were prohibited.

Macron said demonstrations organised by individuals or groups without the required legal authorisation would be banned. Applications submitted by recognised organisations, including trade unions, would be assessed in accordance with the law, although organisers might have to consider alternative arrangements.

He said the measures were necessary to protect city centres, businesses and public buildings. Authorities have also advised against holding demonstrations in the coming days amid concerns about further unrest.

Macron blamed what he described as violent agitators for the incidents last weekend. He also alleged that far-left groups had contributed to the most serious violence through political actions he characterised as an attempt to undermine the Republic.
