Dublin: In Ireland, the HSE is following a huge influx of money due to agency recruitment in the health sector. According to data obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, the agency spends €12 million per week on staffing to fill vacancies.
Figures also show that €144 million was spent on ‘nurse-only’ agency recruitment last year, and €4 million was spent from January to April this year.
Last year, agencies were paid €620 million for recruitment, a 9% increase from 2021. Figures show that 213 million euros were spent on hiring in just four months this year.
Agency recruitment has advanced salaries and working conditions. The person who gets the appointment and the organisation have to pay more. The cost per unit of work for agency employees is higher. According to those in the field, this is what drives the HSE to rely on agency recruitment.
Meanwhile, as an employer, the HSE has fewer responsibilities. The reasons for the HSE’s love of agency are that recruiters do not have pensions and are not subject to the same restrictions on patient numbers as full-time staff.
