French scientist predicts new COVID-19 variant will emerge by winter

DUBLIN: At a time when the world is shocked by the Delta threat, an expert has revealed that a new COVID-19 variant will emerge by the end of this year.

The warning from a French government advisor comes at a time when most of Europe, including Ireland, is under threat from another COVID-19 wave caused by the Delta variant of COVID-19.

Head of the French government’s scientific body, Jean-Francois Delfraissy predicts that a new variant will spread over the world during the winter.

“The big challenge for the next couple of years will be how are we going to co-exist, with two worlds: countries that are vaccinated and those that are not,” he said.

Mr Delfraissy also said that he does not see a return to pre-COVID-19 normality until 2023.

His comments came amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in Ireland and other places in Europe.

People who are not vaccinated in Ireland are being advised to be cautious, especially when travelling abroad.
