Funeral held in breach of lockdown rules; Gardai intervened

WEXFORD: Gardai intervened at a funeral held in County Westford in violation of COVID-19 Level 5 restrictions.

More than 50 people attended a funeral in the Gorey town on Monday evening, while only 10 mourners were allowed to attend a funeral due to lockdown restrictions.

The deceased hailed from a large family in the area. As relatives and friends thronged to attend the funeral, a large crowd formed. Garda had to intervene in the ceremony as people were not observing the social distance.

In response to the incident, Fianna Fáil Senator Malcolm Byrne, who lives in the Gorey town, said: “For the majority of people in this country who follow the rules and try their best, it is very difficult to see a small minority who do not follow the rules.”

“Gardaí tried to do their best, but a small minority do not believe that the rules apply to them. It is important for the overwhelming majority of people in this country that the rules apply to all,” he added.

A similar funeral had taken place at another location in Co Wexford last December. The event, which led to a major outbreak of COVID-19 in the region, is now being investigated by the Gardai. This outbreak has lifted Wexford from one of the lowest rates of COVID-19 in the country to one of the highest.
