GAA suspended all club games in Ireland until further notice

The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) has suspended all club games at all levels following the NPHET’s recommendation to impose Level 5 COVID-19 restrictions across the country.

A number of incidents related to post-match celebrations have been reported in recent games, according to a statement.

In certain situations, there were failures in maintaining social distance. In view of all this, GAA decided to suspend the games until further notice.

Many counties have not yet completed their hurling and football championship campaigns. It is doubtful whether they will be able to finish the competition this year.

“The decision has been taken in the interest of public safety following a number of incidents that have been brought to our attention in recent days,” the statement said.

The decision of the GAA applies to all ages and all grades in Ireland. The GAA also announced that club social centers and bars will be closed.

“Training will continue to be permitted as per the guidelines outlined for the relevant levels in the Government’s National Framework for Living with COVID-19 and relevant guidelines in the Six Counties.”

“The GAA will continue to monitor the situation in the coming days and weeks, regarding changes in government guidelines, before liaising with our units accordingly.”
