Galway Christmas Market has been canceled this year due to public safety concerns

The Galway City Council has confirmed that the Galway Christmas Market, which normally operates from November to mid-December, has been canceled due to public safety concerns. The decision comes as the number of COVID-19 cases in Ireland continues to rise.

A statement from Galway City Council says: “Galway City Council has taken the difficult decision in the interest of public safety to cancel activities and events in Eyre Square in the coming months including the Christmas Markets and comedy festival.”

Although the decision to cancel the event was made in the interest of public safety, the Galway City Council said it understands the decision will disappoint many, including the public, event organisers, businesses and local businesses.

The Galway City Council acknowledged the cooperation of the various event producers to adjust their plans in order to comply with the latest and changing guidelines.

“However, Galway City Council has decided that in the interests of public health, there will be no organised events in Eyre Square for the foreseeable future.

The City Council stated that they are committed to providing a safe and socially distant Christmas experience in Galway this year. However, the council said it expects events and celebrations to be welcomed back to Eyre Square as things move to a safer and more secure state.
