Galway City East accounts for more than half of county’s new COVID-19 cases

GALWAY: The latest data show that Galway City East local electoral area (LEA) had the highest COVID-19 incidence rate in the county.

In the two weeks leading up to April 5, county Galway reported a total of 94 cases. Half of these new cases were registered in the Galway City East LEA.

The 14-day incidence rate in Galway City is 86.4 per 100,000 people, and it is now 188 in Galway City East. At the same time, the incidence rate in Galway City West and Galway City Central LEAs is 63.1 and 104.9, respectively.

The two LEAs in Connemara and Loughrea have the lowest incidence rates in Galway. According to the recent data, the two-week incidence rate in Loughrea has dropped to 34.5 per 100,000 people. Two weeks ago the rate was 224.

Conamara North LEA reported less than five cases, while Conamara South LEA recorded 23.4 cases per 100,000 people.

Ballinasloe LEA has the second highest rate in Galway. Here, the 14-day incidence rate is 153 cases per 100,000 people (45 confirmed cases).

The incidence rate in Gort-Kinvara LEA is 89.3 cases per 100,000 people. Twenty-one new cases were confirmed in this region. In Athenry-Oranmore, 19 new cases were reported, bringing the rate down to 57.9 per 100,000 people.
