Dublin: A 48-year-old Galway man who issued online threats to kill and endanger Tánaiste Simon Harris and his family has been sentenced to four months in prison.
Judge Fiona Lydon told the court that the threats made by Patrick Grealish last August were “of a very serious nature” and initially warranted an eight-month custodial sentence. However, following submissions from defence solicitor Michael Cunningham, the court reduced the term by four months on strict conditions.
The judge said the reduction was granted on the basis that Grealish abstains from alcohol and drugs and complies fully with medical advice.
The court heard that Grealish has 70 previous convictions, primarily for theft and road traffic offences. He has expressed remorse for his actions and submitted a written apology. His legal representative told the court that he is unlikely to reoffend, is currently receiving medication for anxiety and depression, and has completed an eight-week course in cognitive behavioural therapy.
Victim Impact Statement
In a victim impact statement, Mr Harris described the distress caused by anonymous messages sent to his wife and family during the night. He said the threats had a profound emotional impact.
“It is important that the person before the court understands the impact this has had on me and my family,” he said.
Mr Harris highlighted the broader climate of hostility faced by public representatives, noting that violent threats against political leaders are becoming increasingly common. He stated that online anonymity amplifies the harm caused.
“You attacked our family home on the night you decided to threaten my children and my wife,” he said. “I do not know who you are, and I have never wished you harm. Sadly, you did not extend the same respect to my family.”
He added that such actions are not without consequences and urged the defendant to stay away from his family.
