“Galway Ranked 14th Worst in Europe, 37th Worst Globally for Traffic Congestion”

Dublin: Galway has been ranked as the 37th most congested city globally, with drivers spending an additional 73 hours annually in traffic, according to the 2023 Global Traffic Scorecard by Inrix, an urban traffic data analytics company. Galway has moved from the 17th worst to the 14th worst city in Europe for traffic congestion. In the first quarter of 2024, congestion in Galway worsened by 12%, contrasting with improvements in most other surveyed European cities.

Adrian Curran, spokesperson for Galway People Before Profit, highlighted the significant time loss for commuters, emphasising the impact on fuel consumption and emissions. Despite Dublin being ranked higher at 16th globally and fourth in Europe, Galwegians experience more time lost to traffic than Dubliners. Galway’s ranking places it in the worst 4% of the 834 cities analysed worldwide.
