Gardai Arrest Indian Man Sought in Italy Shooting After Seeking Asylum in Ireland

Gardaí have apprehended an Indian man, sought in connection with a shooting in Italy, shortly after he sought asylum in Ireland. The arrest was triggered by an EU alert system indicating that Italian authorities were seeking his extradition for an alleged attempted murder at a family gathering in northern Italy in June. The suspect, wanted across Europe for almost six months, was taken into custody in Dublin after arriving on November 24 to claim asylum under a false name. Gardaí, suspecting his real identity, checked the Schengen Information System, leading to his arrest on November 26. The man, in his late 20s, is set to appear in the High Court in Dublin on December 8 for extradition proceedings. He is accused of attempted murder in connection with a shooting incident in Bergamo, Italy, during a social event celebrating a child’s birth in June.
