Gardai to tighten inspection; 13,600 people were fined for COVID violations

DUBLIN: An Garda Síochána has revealed that Gardai has so far imposed 13,600 fines for COVID-19 violations.

A total of 420 people were fined for organizing illegal house parties and 1,620 for attending parties. Those who organised a gathering were fined €500 and those who attended were fined €100.

As of March 11, a total of 10,013 €100 fines were levied for non-essential travel. 915 fines were levied for non-essential journeys to airports and ports. The 538 people involved were fined €500 each.

Yesterday alone, 244 people were fined €80 each for not wearing a face mask. An Garda Síochána has warned that adults found to be traveling unnecessarily can be fined up to €100 each.

Garda warned the public to be aware that COVID-19 will not take a break from house parties and community gatherings.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí continue to find people gathering in groups at house parties or social gatherings. Such gatherings put at risk not only those attending, but everyone they come into contact with after including loved ones, neighbours, colleagues and local community.”

The Gardai continues to patrol public facilities, parks and beauty spots across the country. Garda requested that people make sure their journeys end within five kilometers.
