Berlin: Germany has introduced visa-free airport transit for holders of Indian passports, eliminating the requirement for Indian travellers to apply for a separate transit visa while connecting through German airports.
The decision—announced in a joint statement during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s first official visit to India—means passengers transiting via key hubs such as Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin will no longer need a Schengen airport transit visa, provided they remain within the international transfer area.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the move and thanked Chancellor Merz, noting that the measure would significantly streamline international travel and reduce administrative burdens for Indian citizens. Both governments described the initiative as a milestone in strengthening bilateral ties and promoting mobility between the two nations.
The joint statement highlighted the importance of expanding collaboration in education, research, vocational training, culture, youth exchanges and skilled workforce development. Germany acknowledged the “valuable contribution of the Indian community to Germany’s economy, innovation and cultural life.”
As part of the enhanced cooperation agenda, Indian students and graduates will be further integrated into the German labour market, and both nations agreed to develop a comprehensive Indo-German roadmap for higher education. Prime Minister Modi also invited German universities to establish campuses in India.
While airport transit will become visa-free, Indian travellers will still require valid visas for entering Germany or other Schengen countries for tourism, business, study or work.
Ease of Travel for Indians in Ireland
The change also benefits Indian citizens residing in Ireland, who can now fly between Ireland and India through German hubs on a single itinerary without additional visa formalities. The simplified transit process is expected to reduce travel time by up to five hours, ease pressure on Middle Eastern hubs and potentially lower air fares on select routes.
