Germany is actively seeking skilled workers from India to address its labour shortages, as announced by German Minister of Labour Hubertus Heil. This initiative will be formalised in the Indian Skilled Worker Strategy, set to be presented at German-Indian government consultations this autumn.
Developed in collaboration with the Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry of Labour, German businesses, states, and other ministries, the strategy aims to attract “bright minds and helping hands” from India. Heil highlighted India’s significant potential, noting its large population and the monthly addition of 1.5 million people to its labour market.
Germany faces a pressing need for labour, with a study by the Institute for Employment Research indicating a requirement of seven million workers by 2035. Over 70 occupations, including transportation, manufacturing, construction, healthcare, engineering, and IT, are currently experiencing shortages.
To combat this, Germany has eased immigration rules, allowing foreign workers with relevant experience and recognised degrees to work in their fields. Additionally, the country has relaxed EU Blue Card requirements and doubled the annual work visas under the Western Balkans Regulation to 50,000, benefiting citizens from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia.
