Cork: The government has given its official approval for BusConnects Cork, a landmark public transport and cycling network upgrade project described as a “dream project” for the city. The approval allows the National Transport Authority (NTA) to proceed with submitting a planning application early next year.
The ambitious scheme, estimated to cost between €2.3 billion and €3.5 billion, aims to deliver fast, green, and reliable public transport across Cork. Developed following extensive public consultation, the project includes 90 km of new bus lanes, 95 km of dedicated cycle tracks, 11 sustainable transport corridors, modern bus shelters, and a zero-emission bus fleet.
BusConnects Cork will also introduce cashless ticketing, two new 24-hour routes running east–west and north–south, and a 50% increase in bus services across the city. Once completed, the project will enable up to 13,000 people to reach Cork city centre within 30 minutes using public transport.
Transport Minister Dara O’Brien hailed the project as a “public transport revolution” for Cork. “BusConnects Cork will make it quicker and easier for people to get to school, work, or visit family and friends. It will also cut congestion and make our streets safer,” he said.
Minister of State Jerry Buttimer described the project as a “game-changer for urban mobility”, while NTA interim CEO Hugh Creegan said it marks a significant step towards sustainable transport in the region.
Labour Councillor Peter Horgan, chair of Cork City Council’s transport committee, welcomed the approval and urged the NTA to publish the final plans soon, adding that the project represents “a transformative opportunity to reshape Cork’s transport future.”
