Dublin: The government has taken swift action in appointing a Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) from Tallaght Garda Station to probe the recent fire at the former St Brigid’s Nursing Home in Crooksling, South Dublin, which was discovered to be housing migrants. The incident occurred yesterday at 7 a.m., with over 40 firefighters successfully extinguishing the blaze. Today, engineers and the Garda Technical Bureau will assess the building’s safety.
The former nursing home, previously rumoured to shelter refugees and international protection applicants, had been a focal point for various protest activities. Social media witnessed widespread propaganda programmes against the facility, with far-right activists sharing information and one even declaring a 24/7 blockade.
Disturbingly, a TikTok video celebrating the fire circulated, featuring an Irish flag and comments justifying the incident. The Brittas Residents Association organised a community meeting, urging anyone with information to contact Tallaght Station or the Garda Confidential Line.
Political leaders, including Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and Opposition Leader Helen McEndy, expressed concern over the escalating attacks across the country. Varadkar criticised those involved in criminal activities, emphasising that only legal immigration occurs in Ireland, with prompt processing of international protection applications.
Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald condemned the criminal act, attributing it to negative attitudes towards refugees. She called for an immediate investigation and justice for the perpetrators. Fianna Fail councillor Charlie O’Connor expressed public concern over the lack of information about the building’s use and criticised the government’s communication strategy, suggesting it may have fueled public unrest.
As the government faces accusations of a hidden agenda, public discontent grows, highlighting the need for transparent communication on matters of public concern, particularly regarding refugee housing.
