Dublin: The Irish government has engaged trade unions in discussions to negotiate a pay raise for the country’s 340,000 public service employees. This decision comes as a response to the escalating cost of living, and there are indications that the proposed salary hike may be implemented gradually, reaching up to four percent. However, trade union leaders are expected to advocate for a higher rate during negotiations.
Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donau assured that any agreed-upon deal would be fiscally responsible and affordable for taxpayers. Despite the emphasis on affordability, Minister Donau expressed optimism about reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.
The current salary agreement, known as the ‘Building Momentum Agreement,’ with government employees is set to expire at the end of December. Senior trade union sources have made it clear that a new agreement is contingent on a pay increase.
