DUBLIN: The booster doses of COVID-19 vaccine will be administered in Ireland in order to counteract the spread of virus variants. The Government plans to offer vaccine booster shots to fully vaccinated people this winter. Further discussions on this are in progress.
Booster doses will provide further resistance against new coronavirus strains. Initially, people over the age of 60 and those who are vulnerable would be given booster doses. The National Immunization Advisory Council is discussing whether the booster dose should be the same vaccine that was first given to the individual or if any other vaccine can be administered.
Government sources said the booster doses were being considered with the aim of protecting the people during the winter season, when the virus is most likel to spread in the country.
The Delta variant of COVID-19 has now been recognized as the most dangerous due to its much higher transmission rate than the other strains. The Delta variant, which was identified in India, is causing concern in the UK as well. The rapid spread of this variant has now prompted the Irish government to consider administering booster shots.
