Government to introduce welfare payment scheme of €203 per week to help 65-year-olds

DUBLIN: The government is coming up with a new scheme to help those 65-year-olds who are no longer employed. The new plan is being implemented to allow a new welfare payment of €203 per week. The 65-year-old will receive the same rate of benefit as job seekers. Eligible dependents will also receive an increase. Eligibility for payment is determined based on an individual’s PRSI contributions.

A person receiving this payment does not have to be available for a full-time job. Also, the person does not need to look for a job or sign in to the Live Register.

Meanwhile, Sinn Fein has come out with strong criticism of the government’s new welfare payment. Party leader Mary Lou McDonald said the project would cost individuals more than €2,000 a year.

She said the announcement of the new scheme after raising the pension age to 66 is a hoax and a breach of promise made in the last general election.
