Government Urged to Renovate ‘Above the Shop’ Homes to Address Housing Crisis, Says Hardware Association Ireland

Dublin: The government has been urged to focus on renovating “above the shop” homes as part of efforts to address Ireland’s housing crisis.

Hardware Association Ireland (HAI) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to tackle the issue, emphasising the need to meet housing targets for the growing population and addressing the backlog of over 95,000 units. The proposal calls for converting vacant upper-floor commercial properties into residential units through targeted incentives and regulatory reforms. Additionally, HAI suggests rejuvenating tens of thousands of vacant homes with grants, tax incentives, and support from local authorities. Other recommendations include VAT reductions for first-time buyers and expanded support schemes.

HAI’s CEO, Martin Markey, emphasised the urgency of addressing the housing crisis, highlighting the need for more homes, increased home ownership, and reduced vacancy and carbon emissions.
