Green jobs abound in Ireland… No pay, No applicants

Dublin: A research report says that despite the large number of vacancies, people are not getting green jobs in Ireland due to lack of pay. The report says that 40 percent of the employees are of the opinion that they are not well paid.

According to the research of the employment website Indeed, the number of ‘green’ jobs has increased by 93 percent. However, there are no applicants due to the low salary.

Since 2019, there has been a seven percent drop in the number of job seekers for green positions. Vacancies in this field include wind energy engineers, solar panel installers, and construction workers.

According to the report, many people are not aware enough about the jobs available in this field. Meanwhile, 39 percent do not know about the qualifications in this field. However, 59 percent say that jobs in this field are interesting and varied, as the report also mentions.

Situations mandated by ESG

As Environmental Social Governance (ESG) standards become mandatory, the demand for professionals in this field is increasing.

The EU recently mandated non-financial ESG reporting for businesses with more than 500 employees. It is against this background that the absence of green employees is critical, said Jack Kennedy, senior economist at Indeed.

The report reveals that a third of employers cited a lack of candidates with the right skills as a crisis, and 28 percent said they were unsure of finding suitable candidates.

Salary is not the only problem…

He explains that salary is not the only problem facing this sector. The problem is that people are not aware of the job opportunities. Moreover, their preconceived notion that they are not suitable for this sector is also a hindrance.

The survey says 89 percent of employers and employees agree that effective sustainability practices and policies are important to the country’s future success.

Research shows that 72 percent of employers have a dedicated department or manager for sustainability and ESG in their organization. Those in architecture, construction, and engineering have ESG departments.
