DUBLIN: A Green Party councillor has found that only four public toilets are currently in operation across Dublin city. Councillor Carolyn Moore highlighted the shortage of public toilets in Dublin and the importance of constructing and maintaining them.
Cllr Moore said 26 facilities previously operated in the city but have since been demolished. “The city is crying out for public toilets, but I discovered one in Rathgar that’s not in use, so requested an audit of Dublin’s loos, past and present,” Ms Moore said.
“Past: 26 facilities — currently not in use; given away, repurposed or demolished. Present: four public toilets in the entire city!,” she said.
There are currently public toilets in Sandymount and Clontarf, as well as two temporary public toilets built last year in Grafton Street and Jervis Street.
The Councillor for Kimmage-Rathmines said the emptiness of public toilets became more apparent last year as pubs and restaurants across the country were closed.
In the 2019 budget, more public toilets were funded. The temporary Grafton and Jervis Street toilets are being funded separately.
