Dublin: Nearly half (49%) of nurses working in Ireland are from outside the country.
It has been revealed in a new report by the Department of Health that 50 percent of nurses have obtained nursing qualifications from outside the country. According to new data, India, the United Kingdom, and the Philippines are the top three countries for foreign-trained nurses.
Last year, there were 67,808 nurses working in Ireland, a 5.8 percent increase over the previous year. There are over 15,000 Indian nurses in Ireland, including those who have been hired this year. Indian nurses are coming to Ireland from many countries other than India.
However, the number of midwives in Ireland is expected to fall by 3.8% by 2021. In Ireland, there are currently 4,210 midwives in practise.
According to new figures, Ireland has 20,256 practising physicians, a 17.6 percent increase over the previous year.
In 2021, general practitioners will account for 58 percent of all practising physicians in Ireland. 6 percent are general paediatricians, and 11.3 percent are psychiatrists.
Of the 25,959 physicians licenced to practise, 40.4% obtained their first medical qualification outside Ireland. Most of these foreign-trained doctors came from Pakistan, Sudan, and the United Kingdom, respectively.
In Ireland, there are 2,420 dentists in practise.
There are 27,208 carers, 5,717 pharmacists, and 5,610 physiotherapists working in Ireland’s health sector. It is clear from the figures released by the HSE that there are more foreign workers in the health sector.
