Professor Deborah McNamara, Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (RCSI), expressed deep concern, noting a tragic rise in fatalities among those who underwent treatments in Turkey over the past few months. Irish medical professionals are particularly alarmed by the growing number of patients returning from Turkey with ‘superbug’ infections and severe complications following cosmetic and medical procedures.
Prospective patients planning to travel to Turkey for surgery are being cautioned about the heightened presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in certain countries, emphasizing the potentially “disastrous” consequences. As a result, individuals experiencing life-threatening complications upon their return are seeking urgent medical attention in Ireland. However, they are bypassing the country’s waiting lists, placing themselves in precarious situations before receiving necessary medical care.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has confirmed that, tragically, four Irish individuals have lost their lives this year after undergoing bariatric (weight loss) and cosmetic surgery in Turkey, with several others currently in critical condition. Last month, a young mother from the east of the country met a tragic end following a weight loss procedure. The DFA acknowledges that the actual number of deaths may be higher due to underreported cases.
Furthermore, concerns are raised about the accreditation status of numerous Turkish clinics offering various procedures, such as hair transplants and dental treatments. The lack of accreditation adds another layer of risk for individuals seeking medical interventions abroad.
