Helmet Rules for E-Scooters Under Review

Dublin: The government is considering making helmets compulsory for e-scooter users as part of a wider effort to toughen regulations.

Spike in Child Injuries

Hospitals report:

  • A fourfold rise in e-scooter injuries since 2021
  • 500 emergency visits in CHI hospitals
  • E-scooters now the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries among children at Temple Street

Dr Emer Ryan says helmets are not the solution for minors and stresses that children should not be on e-scooters at all, noting injuries are now more common than from car or bike accidents.

Current bans on under-16 riders are hard to enforce.
Dr Ryan suggests:

  • Registering scooters to adults
  • Adults modelling safe behaviour, including helmet use

She urges parents to prevent children from riding e-scooters altogether.
