Hospital overcrowding: Violence against nurses are increasing

Dublin: According to INMO, it is unacceptable that people die as a result of inconvenient hospital conditions such as overcrowding and understaffing. The Union General Secretary, Phil Ni Sheaghdha, issued this warning as negotiations for a strike against the government’s continued slowness in this matter are set to begin next week.

There is no excuse for not being able to provide care due to hospital overcrowding and people dying as a result. Because of this, conflicts are increasing in hospitals every day. More than 10 nurses are attacked every day. Disputes with the hospital management are also common in this regard. This also affects the number of people working in the health service. Nurses are on duty 24/7. The union said the workload was “unsustainable”.

The union also claims that the increase in hospital overcrowding is due to a lack of long-term care beds. The General Secretary also said that she thinks it is a decision that needs to be corrected.

More private beds may be considered to avoid waiting on trolleys.

The HSE and the government are considering increasing the use of private beds as part of managing overcrowding in hospitals. This requirement is in response to people remaining on trolleys, including in acute hospitals.

In light of the crisis caused by overcrowding in ED departments, Minister of State for the Environment Jack Chambers proposed increasing private beds.
In recent days, HSE has used 185 private beds. The Private Hospitals Association is willing to provide more services. The minister stated that the HSE should take action to make use of it.

The HSE explained that more funding had been provided to provide private beds and that 140 patients had benefited from this care, which would rise, but that not all patients were suitable for a private bed.

As per HSE, 260 patients are currently waiting for a bed in the country’s acute hospitals. The most people are on trolleys at St. Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin. There are 30 people waiting on trolleys. The HSE also stated that 23 people are being treated at Letterkenny University Hospital.
