HSE Launches Winter Vaccination Programme Amid Rising COVID-19 and Flu Cases in Ireland

Dublin: The Health Service Executive (HSE) has initiated a winter vaccination programme in response to increasing cases of COVID-19 and influenza across Ireland. Vaccines are now available at GP clinics and pharmacies, as well as at workplaces and healthcare vaccination clinics nationwide. Free vaccinations are being offered to those most at risk, including healthcare workers, people over 60, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health conditions. Eligible groups can receive both the COVID-19 and flu vaccines simultaneously.

The HSE has also confirmed that both vaccines will be administered to patients and residents in residential care facilities, such as nursing homes. Additionally, the nasal flu vaccine, available for children aged 2 to 17, will be offered starting from October 7. A third dose of the pneumococcal vaccine, which protects against pneumonia, septicaemia, and meningitis, is recommended for people aged 65 and over.

Rising Health Concerns:
Last winter, over 4,000 people were hospitalised due to flu, with more than 7,000 cases of COVID-19 reported. Between October and April, 214 people lost their lives to the flu, according to data from the Irish Pharmacy Union. Health experts warn that as colder weather approaches, both COVID-19 and influenza could spread widely.

Dr. Louise Marron, a consultant at the HSE National Immunisation Office, emphasised the importance of vaccination, stating, “Both viruses can cause serious illness.” She encouraged the public to take full advantage of the free vaccination services.

Irish Pharmacy Union President Tom Murray echoed this sentiment, noting that even a mild flu can significantly impact families and communities. He urged everyone to take responsibility in protecting those around them from these preventable illnesses.
