DUBLIN: A review by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) yesterday found that the COVID-19 vaccine, developed by AstraZeneca, has not been linked to blood clots. As a result, the HSE intends to resume the administration of the AstraZeneca jab. The EMA review of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine concludes today.
In Norway, there were reports of blood clots in people who received the AstraZeneca vaccine. Amid these concerns, administration of the AstraZeneca jab was suspended in Ireland and several other countries. However, in view of the positive results of an EMA review published on Tuesday, the HSE is now preparing to resume the administration in Ireland.
17 deaths and 557 new cases of COVID-19
The Department of Health has confirmed that 557 new COVID-19 cases and 17 deaths were reported in the Republic of Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day yesterday.
The total number of confirmed cases is now 228,215. The death toll from COVID-19 is 4,566.
Of the cases confirmed yesterday,
● 262 are men and 291 are women
● 74% are under 45 years of age
● The median age is 29
● 229 of the cases are in Dublin, 58 in Kildare, 34 in Donegal, 31 in Meath, 24 in Tipperary and the remaining 181 cases are spread across all other counties.
As of yesterday morning, 350 COVID-19 patients were hospitalised, with 83 in ICU.
