HSE to develop new app for recording antigen COVID-19 test results

DUBLIN: The Health Service Executive is planning to develop a new application that will allow people to upload the results of rapid antigen COVID-19 tests.

Currently, participants in antigen testing pilot programmes are required to manually record their results. The HSE found this to be a difficult process and considered introducing a more accessible platform.

“We’re looking to build an app to record antigen test results, or an online platform to do the same,” said Niamh O’Beirne, the HSE’s head of testing and tracing.

Such a system or application will help the Department of Health in reaching out to those who tested positive in an antigen test and arranging PCR testing. The HSE said it was in discussion with software developers about the requirements for such a system.

Public health officials have previously warned against using antigen tests because they do not always provide accurate results.

Today, the Department of Health reported 1,819 new cases of COVID-19 in Ireland. There are now 206 people in the hospital with COVID-19, 36 of them are in the intensive care unit.
