Dublin: The Health Service Executive (HSE) has warned of a spike in flu cases during the Christmas and New Year period, urging the public to remain cautious as seasonal infections rise.
According to the HSE, influenza cases are expected to peak over the Christmas week. While the rate of increase is beginning to slow, overall infection levels continue to rise. As of last Saturday, 3,287 flu cases were reported nationwide, up from 2,943 the previous week.
HSE Chief Executive Bernard Gloster had earlier predicted that daily hospital admissions related to flu could range between 700 and 1,500 cases. That estimate has since been revised to between 800 and 1,100 daily admissions. Last week, 816 patients were admitted to hospital with influenza, while 634 people were hospitalised with flu yesterday alone.
The HSE continues to monitor the situation closely and is advising people to take preventive measures, particularly during the festive season.
