Hundreds of thousands of Covid certificates to be issued in Ireland within weeks

DUBLIN: Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has announced that hundreds of thousands of Digital Certificates will be issued in Ireland over the next three weeks. He said the Government is also considering whether the certificates could be used as a pass to allow people to engage in indoor activities.

The EU Digital COVID Certificate is proof that a person has been fully vaccinated, recovered from COVID over the last nine months, or tested negative for the virus. Mr. Varadkar said people will receive them either electronically or by post.

All EU countries except Ireland implemented the Digital Cert, which allows people to travel freely across Europe, on July 1st. Ireland is facing delays due to the recent HSE cyber-attack, and is set to start using the system from July 19.

“It was only ever intended for international travel and border check control people checking these passes is a very different thing from your local pub or your local restaurants and that’s what needs to be worked out,” the Tánaiste said.

However, Taoiseach Micheál Martin earlier said that the Government is not conflating the issues of travel and hospitality at the moment, and that they are working for the use of the certificates for international travel.

Labour leader Alan Kelly said the Government’s decision to postpone the resumption of indoor dining was “embarrassing”.
