Dublin: New car registrations in Ireland rose by 2.4% in the first five months of 2025, reaching 79,301 units, driven by strong growth in hybrid and electric vehicles. Regular hybrid sales rose 18%, EVs climbed 23%, and petrol plug-in hybrids surged 54%. In contrast, petrol and diesel registrations declined by 13% and 22%, respectively.
Petrol cars remain the most registered (21,890), followed by hybrids (18,312), diesel (13,816), EVs (12,392), and petrol PHEVs (11,608). Toyota leads the market with a 14% share, trailed by Volkswagen, Hyundai, Skoda, and Kia. BMW is the top premium brand.
The Hyundai Tucson is the best-selling model, while Volkswagen’s ID.4 tops EV sales. Toyota dominates the hybrid segment with over half the market share.
Commercial vehicle sales have declined, with van registrations down 8.8% and truck sales falling 16% year on year.
