Discover the Rich Traditions of Ugadi and Gudi Padwa – Celebrate with ICSC Galway!
As we approach April 9th, 2024, let’s dive into the captivating stories behind two of India’s most cherished festivals: Ugadi and Gudi Padwa.
‘Ugadi’: Known as the Telugu and Kannada New Year, Ugadi marks the beginning of a new lunar cycle and symbolizes the arrival of spring. It is celebrated with great fervor and joy in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. Families come together to cleanse their homes, prepare delicious traditional dishes, and offer prayers for prosperity and happiness in the coming year.
‘Gudi Padwa’: Celebrated predominantly in Maharashtra, Gudi Padwa heralds the onset of the Hindu New Year. It commemorates the day when Lord Brahma created the universe. Families raise the Gudi, a flag or banner adorned with vibrant colors and silk cloth, symbolizing victory and auspiciousness. Festivities include traditional dances, songs, and feasting on delectable sweets like Puran Poli.
