New Delhi: An international academic conference aimed at strengthening historical and cultural ties between India and Ireland was held at Miranda House, bringing together scholars and educationists from both nations.
The conference, titled “India and Ireland: Shared Pasts and Interconnected Histories”, was inaugurated by Kevin Kelly. It focused on the historical connections between the two countries, including colonial experiences, migration patterns, and the evolving relationship shaped by shared global contexts.
In his address, Ambassador Kelly highlighted how colonial legacies and both nations’ historical ties with United Kingdom have influenced and, at times, complicated bilateral relations. He also emphasised the important role played by diaspora communities in strengthening people-to-people connections.
The conference featured discussions on historical exchanges, intellectual links, and the movement of people between India and Ireland over time. It aimed to deepen academic collaboration and foster a better understanding of shared experiences.
The event was organised by Jill Bender, Visiting Associate Professor at the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame and Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, along with Dheeraj Mehra, Director of Notre Dame Global Indian Initiatives, and faculty members Sneha Jha and Madhu of Miranda House.
